I have to admit, I waited for a really long time to get an air fryer, and to be honest I only have one now because it was a gift! I just couldn’t buy into the hype!
But oh…my…goodness was I wrong. In the last six months, my air fryer is probably the one piece of equipment I use the most in my kitchen.
I love using it for air-frying bananas. They take just minutes, I don’t need to turn on my oven, and they don’t dirty up a bunch of dishes.
Air frying or baking bananas softens the fruit and enhances its natural sweetness. They make a great topping for breakfast barley porridge, ice cream, chia pancakes, and desserts. They’re also the perfect treat all on their own!

🥘 Ingredients to Make Air Fryer Bananas
All you need are four simple ingredients to make air fryer dessert bananas to satisfy your sweet tooth!
- Bananas: Ripe but not overly ripe, fresh bananas work best.
- Cinnamon: Adds a bit of spicy sweetness to the bananas.
- Coconut oil: Just a touch lightly brushed on the bananas and aid them in cooking.
- Himalayan pink salt: The finishing touch after cooking that makes the perfect salty complement to the natural sweetness of the banana and cinnamon. I prefer a coarser grain of salt in this recipe.

🔀 Substitutions
Looking for some quick and easy swaps you can make to use up ingredients you already have in your kitchen? Here are some ideas.
- Bananas: This preparation also works with pineapple and sweet or ripe plantains.
- Himalayan pink salt: I love splurging with a bit of pink salt here in this simple recipe but you can use regular sea salt or kosher salt instead.
- Coconut oil: You can easily make it with another type of neutral oil or even use butter instead.
- Cinnamon: Swap the cinnamon for apple pie spice or pumpkin spice instead.
Variations
Looking to spice things up? Here are a few “extras” to make your air fried bananas even better!
- Add a sprinkle of sugar over the top just before cooking. It will melt and create a caramelized layer on the top of the bananas.
- Add a dash of cayenne for a bit of heat that works well with the sweetness and cinnamon.
- Brush your bananas with a bit of pure vanilla extract just before cooking. Like the cinnamon, it will enhance the natural sweetness of the bananas.
🔪 How to Make Fried Bananas in the Air Fryer
This trusty air fryer recipe takes only 10 minutes total time to prepare, from start to finish. Let’s take a look at the main steps!
- Peel each banana and then cut the ends off so they are flat.
- Cut into the remaining banana into 1-inch pieces.
- Lay the bananas on a tray or inside the air fryer basket in a single layer. Use a pastry brush to spread the top of the banana slices with coconut oil.
- Sprinkle with ground cinnamon.
- Cook the bananas in the air fryer at 375° F or 180° C and cook for 6 minutes. The tops should be golden brown and slightly crispy looking around the edges.
- Serve immediately and sprinkle lightly with sea salt.
⭐ Pro Tip: Depending on the size of your air fryer you may need to cook your fried bananas in batches.
Storage
- Refrigerator: Cooked bananas are really best eaten hot, at the time they are cooked. But if you have leftovers, store them in the refrigerator for up to three days.
- Reheat: They don’t reheat all that well because they soften too much but you can microwave them or simply eat them straight from the refrigerator.
- Freezer: I don’t recommend freezing air fryer bananas.
How to Serve Fried Bananas
These sugar-free caramelized bananas make a great snack or dessert. Here are just a few ways to use them!
- In a bowl: Alone or add on some mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce or maple syrup with whipped cream for a yummy dessert.
- Pancakes: Top your favorite stack of pancakes, french toast or waffles with these sweet, cooked bananas. My favorites are these chocolate banana protein pancakes and vegan chia pancakes.
- Ice cream topping: These bananas are perfect on top of a scoops of ice cream. They’re great with vanilla ice cream or your favorite flavor!
- Cakes: Add it over a plain pound cake or loaf cake for a little extra flavor.
- Breakfast cereal: I love adding them to this homemade breakfast porridge or vegan baked oats.
- Yogurt, chia pudding or overnight oat jars: Your breakfast meal prep won’t be the same ever again when you add air fryer bananas on the top. Try it on oat jars or chia pudding to see what I’m talking about!
- Peanut butter toast: Or almond butter, pistachio butter or any other nut butter. Just add some air fryer bananas on top and enjoy!
💭 Expert Tips
- Avoid overripe bananas. It’s ok if they have a few brown spots on the peels but you want them mostly yellow or even a bit green.
- Serve immediately, warm or at room temperature, and try to plan for no leftovers.
- Enjoy eating them on their own or on other dishes.
- For best results don’t skip the salt but don’t overdo it. Just a light sprinkle to make all the flavors really pop!
- Cook in a single layer and split into batches if they don’t all fit.

I used coconut cooking spray, and then shook them in a bowl with unsweetened coconut shreds as well as cinnamon. Lengthen cooking time to 7 minutes to crisp the edges a little.Reply
