Month of the Military Child

HCPS CommunicationsAnnouncements

Henrico County Public Schools is happy to celebrate military-connected children throughout the month of April as part of Month of the Military Child. HCPS has more than 600 children whose parents or guardians are active-duty military service members, National Guard or reservists.

“As we honor the bravery of our military service members, we are also dedicated to supporting all of our students that come from military families,” said Amy Cashwell, HCPS superintendent. “We’re proud to meet the needs of military-connected students throughout Henrico, and Month of the Military Child gives us an amazing opportunity to share their stories and appreciate their strength and sacrifices.”

Schools are spotlighting these students from military families and building awareness of the unique challenges military-connected students and their families face each day. The HCPS community is encouraged to wear purple on Wednesday, April 19, as part of the national “Purple Up! For Military Kids Day.”

To learn more about Month of the Military Child and how to participate, you can use the toolkits provided by Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) and the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3).

March 28, 2023 is now a student holiday/staff clerical day

HCPS CommunicationsAnnouncements

Dear Henrico families and staff:

Recently, a March 28 special election was announced for the Virginia Senate’s 9th District which includes a portion of Henrico County. With more than two dozen schools used as polling places, this election will significantly impact school operations. Therefore, Tuesday, March 28, will be a student holiday and staff clerical day.Banked instructional time will be used to offset the closure so the time does not need to be made up.

We understand this may be an inconvenience for families. Great thought was given before deciding to close schools. For every election, Dr. Cashwell and division leaders evaluate school layouts and the potential to relocate polling areas within the building to allow voters limited access without compromising school safety plans. That is not an option for the specific schools needed for this election.

We appreciate your understanding, flexibility and partnership in your student’s education.

Thank you,
