Love it when my worlds collide! It was a pleasure to speak at the beautiful Swiss Re offices about the benefits of volunteering and share some of my personal experiences with Lifeline Australia as a volunteer as well as promoting all the great work ALUCA - Australasian Life Underwriting and Claims Association does for the life insurance industry.National volunteer week, supported by Volunteering Australia (VA) provides an opportunity to highlight the important role of volunteers in our community, and invites people not volunteering to give it a go.Know a volunteer? Celebrate them! Thinking of volunteering? Check out https://lnkd.in/gpHcfR7R - there are always so many ways to get involved!

Imagine this happened to you this morning…what would you do? On your way to the office you order your coffee and peanut butter on toast and when the woman at the cafe hands it to you she has two orders in her hand. She checks your one and hands it to you, you check the tag on the brown paper bag and see it says ‘peanut butter on toast’. You walk away and think nothing more until 10 mins later you open the bag to see they’ve mixed up your orders (or it’s the strangest, most Vegemite smelling peanut butter you have ever seen!) Do you:1. walk the 10 mins back to the cafe, complain and wait for them to make you a new order. You’re late for your first meeting of the day; your manager is not impressed. 2. quickly head to a different closer cafe and order again (you’ll never be going back to that cafe again… they don’t deserve your business given this monumental stuff up) You’re on time for your meeting but you don’t have time to eat the toast and end up eating it cold 45 mins later. 3. Throw away the toast in anger, decide your day is ruined and skip breakfast altogether (but at least you’re on time for your meeting!) After the meeting someone asks you if you’re feeling ok, you were a bit short in the meeting, like something else was on your mind?4. Be grateful you don’t mind Vegemite toast. Be grateful you got the right coffee order. Eat the toast. Be on time for your meeting and get on with your day. I will always, always pick #4. When things happen that are out of your control, how you manage your mindset is the #1 thing you can control. Having a negative mindset when things go wrong only impacts you - and can often have knock on effects when you hang on to those negative emotions. The power of letting go, of seeing the positives is often bigger than you realise.

Why is communication so much harder in larger organisations? How do messages get so mixed, why do things get lost in translation? This image helps us visualise why. The more people involved, the more lines of communication are crossed. This is why it’s important that managers communicate:- the same message multiple times, in multiple ways - ensure messages are clear and concise - check in with multiple stakeholders in the communication chain to see how messages have been received. It can be tough, but when done right, clear messaging creates a stronger and psychologically safer organisation. #amplifygrowth

Why I hate the term work-life ‘balance’ it’s should be ‘work-life wellbeing’. Life should always be the priority!!

Thank you Swiss Re for encouraging your staff to be mental health first aiders. Today I had a full room of 15 students who were all passionate about learning the skills to better support their colleagues, friends and family with their mental health. It was an absolute pleasure to share the Mental Health First Aid Australia training with you. Interested in having me as a trainer within your organisation? Reach out! P.s. thank you ALGEE for all your help in the training today too! (If you know you know 😉🐨)

Some interesting data from the ABS; almost half of people who work in jobs where their qualification isn’t relevant do so because of lack of interest in the field or because they wanted a career change. My takeaways are:- study is sometimes an exploration which leads to working out what you really want to do, and that’s ok- not wanting to do something you’re qualified for because you’re not interested is a far higher reason than lack of availability of jobs for not continuing to work where you’re qualified. This tells me that understanding your work values and interests is just as important as having a qualification and worrying about availability of jobs to help choose a field of study may not be as important as you think it is- career change outside of what you originally thought you would do is normal. Don’t pigeon hole yourself in your career thinking you can only do things related to your qualifications! #AmplifyGrowth #careerchangeisok #studyleadstoexploration
